Austen Family Album Quilt - Blocks 35 and 36 Done !!!!!

Block 35 is English Ivy for the Littleworths who were neighbors of the Austen Family.  Not really my favorite block in this quilt.  My center seam is a little off and I did not realize it until I saw the picture - maybe it will quilt out!!  LOL

Block 36 is Modern Envelope for Anne Sharp.  Anne was a pen pal of Jane's and one of her last letters was written to Anne Sharp.  The post on the Austen Family Album blog stated that in Jane's age they wrote letters on one piece of paper and then folded it to be the envelope also.

And that is the last one of the blocks for this project.

Not sure yet how and/or when I will put these together into a quilt top.  I have a couple of other projects that I need to complete first.  I have enjoyed making all of these different blocks and may actually use some of them in future quilts.

Thanks to Barbara Brackman for putting this together and I really enjoyed all of the history about Jane Austen, her family and times.

Also check out the Flicker Group for Austen Family Album to see the blocks made by other crazy quilters who have followed along on this project with me.

Austen Family Album Quilt - Blocks 33 and 34 Done

Between work, family and vacation I have not been in my sewing room for quite a while.

However, today I got back to sewing and got Blocks 33 and 34 done.

Block 33 is Corn and Beans for the Digweed Family.  The Digweed Family had a neighboring farm to the Austen family.

Block 34 is Queen Charlotte's Crown for the Princess of Wales.

Felt good to be sewing again.  Only two more blocks to go on this project.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!  I have so much to be thankful for: husband, children, granddaughter, parents, siblings, aunt, friends and a wonderful church family!!

Just finished this wall hanging last night.  Hung it in the window - so that is why there is light coming out around it.

Have a good day with family and friends.

Storytime Squares Quilt #1 - Done

LA while ago I found a pattern for a quilt top called Storytime Squares at made-by-Rae.com.  It uses 8 fat quarters and a solid material and works great for a baby quilt.

I had some fun boy fabrics that I bought at Material Girl in Crystal Lake, IL and so decided to make a baby quilt for my co-workers sister who just had her baby boy today (actually he is over one month early!)

Got the binding sewn down tonight and will get it to the baby before he goes home.

I have another set of fat quarters picked out for another baby boy quilt using this pattern but I won't get to that quilt until the beginning of December.

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block 32 done

This week's block is Ladies Wreath for Jane Austen's sister-in-law Elizabeth Bridges Knight.  Elizabeth died giving birth to her eleventh child.

I am very happy with this block and the fabrics that I chose.

Only four more to go!!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block 31 done

This week's block is called Lady of the Lake for Sir Walter Scott. Jane Austen used a reference to the  poem Lady of the Lake in her Persuasion novel and apparently had a professional relationship with Sir Walter Scott.

The picture makes the tan fabric look yellow - must be the lighting in my sewing room!

Only five more blocks to go!!!

Re-Piecing the Past quilt top done

I bought Kaye Englands class from Craftsy called Re-Piecing the Past.  The blocks are Civil War based and named and were fun to do.

The pattern called for flying geese, four patches and other elements to be put in between the blocks to create the top. However I did not like how it looked so decided to just use a sashing material. The only complication is that two of the blocks were larger than the rest but with a little math I figured out how to add an additional piece of fabric to make everything even.

I really like how this quilt came out and may use the block patterns to make other quilt tops in the future.

I used the leftover fabric to make a pieced backing and two of the red fabrics to make the binding material

So off this quilt top and backing go into my closet along with the number of other projects waiting to be quilted!!

Now I just need to find about two weeks worth of time to use my aunts Longarm quilting machine!!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Blocks 29 & 30 Done

Due to family activities and then a sinus infection I did not get last week's and this week's blocks done until tonight.

Block 29 is Lend & Borrow for James Stanier Clarke who was a royal librarian who encouraged Jane Austen and may be Jane's model for Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice.

Also my fathers family has lineage with the last name of Clarke ( and my fathers first name is Clarke) so maybe I am a long lost relative of James Clarke!!!

Block 30 is Caroline's Choice for Queen Caroline.  I love this block and may have to use it in a future quilt

That's 30 of 36 blocks done!

I started to think about which layout to use for these blocks.  The Austen Family Album Quilt blog has several layout options and I am considering one of the 'on point' layouts but not sure yet

Austen Family Album Quilt-Block 28 Done

This weeks block is Crossroads for Harris Bigg-Wither, the man who once proposed marriage to Jane Austen.  While Jane at first accepted his proposal she then declined it and never married in her lifetime.

I picked some brighter colors this week and I really happy with how the block turned out

Only 8 more blocks to go!!  Going to have to start considering how to out them together into a quilt top.

Tell it to the Stars - Clue 9 and 10 done

The clue for September and October is to assemble the blocks we have been making for the past eight months with sashing and cornerstones.  I decided to use the same block layout the Judy had on her blog as my blocks looked good in that layout

Apparently the next two months will be adding borders and Judy is famous for her border designs!  Looking forward to what she has designed for us to do.

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block 27 done

This weeks block is King's Crown for King George III who reigned during Jane's lifetime.

My Bee group suggested I add more green into my blocks after viewing what I had done.  So I found a fun fabric with green accents and then also added a green fabric

Thanks to the comments added to the Austen Family Album blog with the corrections to the directions.  I did need the extra size on the triangle on the bottom to make the block work.

I am really enjoying the block a week project and may miss it when it is over!!!

Quilt Finishes

Recently I finished the binding on my Cabin in the Woods quilt.

I found this pattern in a 'use your scraps' book and it was fun to do.  My Aunt Bonnie quilted this for me using a falling leaves pattern.

Tonight I finished the binding on a baby girl quilt that I am making for a co-worker

The pattern is very easy and I think I got the top done in one night. Then it took me a couple of months to get it finished!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block #26 Done

Block #26 is Fanny's Favorite for Fanny Knight a niece of Jane Austen's.

This seems to have been the most intricate block yet but I am happy with how my block came out.

Only a few more blocks left!  Then to figure out how to layout the blocks and if I need to remake any of them.

Quilting Weekend

My Aunt Bonnie and I went up to Twin Lakes , WI this past weekend for a quilting weekend.

We setup our sewing machines at the kitchen table

Then we used the converted porch for our ironing, cutting and design wall area

I had taken five projects with me and I am glad to say that I worked on all five of them!!

First I finished Block 25 of the Austen Family Album quilt (see previous post).

Then I assembled a Hopscotch board project.  The board turned out so big that I had to take the picture in two pieces.

My third project was the Blue Schoolhouse kit that I purchased from Pam Buda.  I was a little nervous as the pieces were small but I got it done and I love the finished product!!

My fourth project was to make blocks for a pattern that I purchased on Craftsy called Stained Glass.  I did finish all twelve blocks but did not get a picture of them. I also got them laid out how I want to sew them together but need to cut the sashing strips before I can do that

My last project was to lay out and sew together 48 blocks for a project that I can't show.  The project is a gift for someone that reads my blog.

It was a great weekend and I can't wait to do it again!!  Thanks Bonnie for a great time.

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block 25 done

Block 25 is Anna's Choice for Anna Austen, Jane's niece.

I used some of my mom's sparkle fabric again and introduced light purple into my blocks.

I actually finished this block on Friday the 26th while on a quilting weekend with my Aunt Bonnie.

Willl do another post tonight with more details of our quilting weekend.  It was a blast and I got a lot done!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Blocks 23 and 24 Done

After having been sick for a week, I finally got back into my sewing room today.

Block 23 is Old Maid's Puzzle for Tom LeFroy.  Tom proposed to Jane at one time but did not have the means to marry her.

The ironic thing about this block is that my father just bought an antique quilt from an antique shop recently and it is made up of Old Maid's Puzzle blocks. I did not even know the name of this block until I looked it up for my father.

Block 24 is Wheel of Change for Capt de Feullide.  The Captain was the first husband of one of Jane's sister in laws and was beheaded in France during the Reign of Terror.

My Aunt Bonnie recently brought me some fabrics from a trip - one has hearts and another has butterflies.  Bonnie said that they reminded her of my mother and the fact that I like to use fabrics that remind me of my mother.   The star fabric also was from my mother's stash and was a favorite of hers also.

Amazing how good it feels to touch fabric again!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block #22 Done

The block this week is called Friendship for Anne Bridges LaFroy a friend of Jane's

My fabric choice is a little modern this week but I really wanted to use the sparkle fabric in one of my Jane Austen blocks.  It is part of my mother's stash and I have had fun including her sparkle fabric in several other quilts - including one that I made for my sister.

This block was from last Sunday the 30th of August but I did not get it done until tonight due to a variety of other things that came up.

On to the next project !!!!!!

Northwoods Quilt Shop Finds

My husband and I visited my sister in northern Wisconsin this past weekend.  While the weather was pretty wet we had a good visit and did have one day to hike in Copper Falls State Park.

We also went up to Ashland and Bayfield - both towns along the south shore of Lake Superior.  And as usual I found a coupe of quilt shops to visit.

Here are my purchases of fat quarters with writing that is quilting and sewing related. I hope to find a special pattern to use for these fabrics.

On the right side is a little wall banner with a lighthouse - my mothers favorite - so had to buy it.

I love finding quilt shops while on vacation.  They are all so fun to look at and the owners are always so friendly and happy that you stop by!!

Austen Family Album Quilt-Block #21 West Wind Done

This weeks block is West Wind dedicated to Tom Fowle - Jane's sister Cassandra's fiancé who died of yellow fever while serving as a chaplain.

As I was sewing the block together I realized that I had picked yellow fabric without even thinking about the significance!

I also have a soft spot for Tom Fowle as my grandfather Edwin Stevens was a chaplain in England during World War II.  He did get sick while serving there but survived to come home to his family.

Can't believe we are done with 21 blocks already. It has gone fast and I look forward to doing a new block each Sunday!

Austen Family Album Quilt -Block #20 Best Friend done

Block #20 is Best Friend for Martha Lloyd another Austen family friend.

I pulled some more modern fabrics this week and hope this block looks ok with the rest of them.

Maybe over this coming weekend I will lay them all out to see them together.

Tell it to the Stars - August clue #8 Done

This month's clue was to make some setting triangles for the quilt top.

They turned out great and have me very excited to see how it all goes together.

See my other Tell it to the Stars posts during 2014 to see the blocks that have already been made.

I took the picture with the Rotary Mat upside down so it looks like I flipped the picture but I did not!

On to the next project for August.......

Austen Family Album Quilt-Block 19 Cross Patch - Done

This weeks block is Cross Patch for Jane Austen's sister in law Mary Lloyd Austen.

Apparently Jane did not get along Mary so this blocks name is appropriate.

Love the darker fabric in the block as it has a gold filigree on it.

This is 19 out of 36 blocks so we are over half way done!!!

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block #18 Indian Star done

Continuing on the block of the week project I made this weeks block #18 Indian Star for Warren Hastings.   Mr Hastings was a family friend of the Austen's and lived a good part of his life in India.

Go the the Austen Family album blog to read more history on Warren Hastings.

Also continuing to use blue fabrics from my Blue bin and found some with red accents for this weeks block.

Love the border fabric as it has butterflies which my mother loved.  Seems like I keep talking about my mother while working on this quilt.  Guess my love of sewing and quilting is tied to her as she did teach me how to sew years ago.

Mom's birthday is coming up on Friday and her sister and I will go out to lunch at Red Lobster in her honor.  Miss her every day.

Pillowcases for Conker

My local quilt guild, NSQG, collects pillowcases for Conker to be given to cancer patients.

I watch the remnants bins at fabric stores to buy fun pieces of fabric especially for kids.

Last Saturday I started working on some pillowcases and tonight I finished up the fabric that I had in the queue.   Got a total of 10 pillowcases done!!!

Now just to wash, press and package in time to take to the NSQG meeting later this month.

Polka Dots, Patterns and Pinwheels - Done!!!

I finished assembling the quilt top called Polka Dots, Patterns and Pinwheels today.  Then I also put together a pieced backing and created the binding material.

This is the finished top - I am happy with how it came out.  I was able to correct all of the bad piecing that I had done when I started this a year or so ago.

I think that I will try to machine quilt it - not on the Longarm - but need to change around my sewing room to setup my mom's sewing machine to do the quilting.

Have a couple of other projects that I want to complete first.

Progress on Polka Dots, Prints and Pinwheels

Last week I pulled out a UFO project that had been gathering dust for over a year and figured out where I should re-start the project

I must say that my sewing skills have definitely improved since I started this project.  My half square triangles are not very well constructed or consistent.  But I have decided to keep working on it and get it finished.

I also discovered that when sewing the half square triangles into pinwheels that I switched the squares and did not sew them all together correctly.  This caused me to have to pull apart about 7 of the pinwheel blocks and re-sew them together the correct way.

Tonight I used my design wall and laid them out into rows.

The picture came out a little dark. I am happy with the layout and did sew together the first row.

With my inconsistent half square triangles the first row is a little wonky but I hope to fix that when sewing the rows together.

More later as I continue to plow through this project.

Austen Family Album Quilt - Block 17 Waterwheel Done

This weeks block is called Waterwheel for Jane's Uncle James Leigh-Perrot.  James suffered from gout and visited Bath often to see if the waters could help him.

This week I used more of my blue fabrics and actually made the whole block out of fabrics from my mother's stash!  My mom loved blue as much as I did so even though I have made several quilts from her stash fabrics I still have plenty of blue fabrics left.

Sorry that this picture is a little at an angle.  I am not totally sure about the fabric combination this week but going to leave it as is.

Be sure to go to either the Austen Family Album Quilt blog or the flicker group to see more about this project.

Polka Dots, Prints and Pinwheels - UFO

I had started this quilt at least a year ago and for some reason stopped working on it.

Yesterday I pulled it out and determined where I had stopped in the instructions.  So now I have decided to start working on it again.

I have all of the half square triangles made - I just need to sew them into pinwheel squares and assemble them into rows.

I did not have this in my plan for this month but am going to see how far I can get on this.

Craftsy Class - Re-Piecing the Past - Blocks Done

A year or so ago, I purchased a Craftsy class taught by Kaye England called Re-Piecing the Past Civil War Blocks.  I did not have many fabrics that could be considered Civil War so spent the past year purchasing fat quarters here and there of Civil War type fabrics.

Two months ago I started making the blocks - there are twelve in total.  This weekend I devoted all of my free time to completing the last of the blocks and did finish them tonight.

One block I had to do twice as the first time I cut the fabric pieces two small.  Unfortunately I did not have enough of the original fabrics to use them for the second block so had to dig out some more fabrics to make the new one.

Here are the completed blocks laid out as suggested.

Two of the blocks are 14 1/2 unfinished with all the others 12 1/2 unfinished.

The block in the upper right is the one I had to make twice.  The block in the lower left I had to alter as the center portion came out too small - so I added a border of the pink fabric to make it the correct size.

The pattern calls for four square blocks, nine patch blocks, flying geese and lines of scraps in between these blocks but I am not sure that I want to do that.  I am actually thinking about just sashing between them with one fabric and then adding a border of scraps - maybe four square blocks.

What do you think?

Austen Family Album Quilt-Block#16 Lucky Pieces done

Block #16 is Lucky Pieces for Jane's Aunt Jane Leigh-Perrot (her mother's sister).

I continue to use blue fabrics from my bin and incorporated yet another of my mother's fat quarter fabrics into this block.  My reason is two-fold: I try to include my Mom's stash in every quilt I make and my mother's sister - my lovely Aunt Bonnie is very special to me.

The sparkle in the outer fabric does not show in the picture - but the sparkle is in honor of Bonnie - she is an always sparkly person who brings love and support to all she knows.

Love how this block came out!!!

Garage Sale Find!!!

On Saturday morning I walked around my neighborhood and stopped at a garage sale.

I what did I spy but one of the tabletop ironing boards!!  I have wanted one to have for quilting classes and retreats but never got around to buying one.

Best part about this is that it was marked $5 but they were running a half-off day so I only paid $2.50!!!  Saw one of these in the Nancy's Notions catalog today and it was $35 plus shipping.

I love garage sales but finds like this are few and far between.

Austen Family Album Quilt-Block #15 King's Crown - Done

This week's block is called King's Crown for the Regent Prince of England that reigned during Jane Austen's lifetime.

I continue to dig into my Blue Fabric Bin and pulled out some of my favorites.

The heart fabric in the center is from my mother's collection - she was a heart patient and collected heart fabrics to use in her projects.  I have used the heart fabrics on my projects also and I am glad that I could use it again.

Combining my love for my mother and my love of Jane Austen is sweet!!!!

Wedding Quilts Delivered

We had a bridal showed for my niece Kelsey and niece in law to be Sierra out in Freeport, IL at my brothers house.

My Aunt Bonnie and I had made both of the girls quilts as gifts. Bonnie and I each made half of the blocks and then we combined them together.

Bonnie finished the Charmed Pinwheel quilt for Sierra which included sewing the blocks together with the sashing, quilting on her long arm machine, making the label and binding the quilt.

I finished the Anita's Arrowhead quilt for Kelsey which also included sewing the blocks together, machine quilting on Bonnie's Longarm and binding. Bonnie made the label for this quilt which includes a picture of the lighthouse painting that Kelsey had done for her grandmother when she was a child.  Also the backing material of lighthouses was part of her grandmothers stash.

Bonnie and I love doing these projects together. Not only does it give us a chance to be with each other but they help to use up our own personal stashes of fabric!!!

Best wishes to both Kelsey and Sierra for many happy and healthy years with their future husbands !!

Austen Family Album Block #14 Home Comfort Done

This weeks block is called Home Comfort for Jane's brother George Austen II.  George apparently had a mental condition and did not live with the Austen family for most of his life.

Continuing the use of blue fabrics and combined two floral fabrics that are from my mother's stash.  Also used another of the sparkle fabrics from her stash - I love using them!!

Go to Austenfamilyalbumquilt.blogspot.com to see this and other blocks

There is also a Flicker group for the Austen Family Album where myself and others are posting pictures of our finished blocks.  Join and see all of the unique blocks!!

Tell it to the Stars - Clue #7 July Done

This months clue had us making six blocks of the same design.

In my usual manner I figured out how to chain piece almost all of the sewing.

The finished blocks are kind of plain but I am sure they will fit in the quilt top design very nicely

Austen Family Album Quilt - Blocks 12 and 13 Done

We were on vacation last Sunday so I was a little behind but got two blocks done tonight.

Block #12 is Waves of the Sea for Francis Austen another of Jane's brothers. He was very successful in the military and actually became an Admiral and was Knighted.

Continuing the use of blue fabrics and tried to use as many different ones as possible.

Block #13 is Crosses & Losses for Charles Austen - yet another brother of Jane's.  Charles also was in the military and became a Rear Admiral (not sure what the difference is between an Admiral and a Rear Admiral).

More blue fabrics used for this block. I am starting to see a decrease in the blue fabric box but am keeping out the fabrics I use to keep from duplicating them - at least for now.

May try to use the fabrics again in either the sashing, borders and/or the binding.

This is now 13 done out of 36 so we are 1/3 done!!
